Professional tax in Tamil Nadu
Professional tax is the small state tax your employer deducts from your gross salary every month. Here is exactly what Tamil Nadu deducts at each salary level in FY 2026-27 — and what it does to your in-hand pay.
How the deduction works in Tamil Nadu
In Tamil Nadu professional tax is a local-body levy — every corporation, municipality and panchayat sets its own rates within statutory bands, so there is no single statewide schedule. Our calculator uses the Greater Chennai Corporation schedule as the reference: a half-yearly amount based on half-yearly income (nil up to ₹21,000; ₹180 up to ₹30,000; ₹425 up to ₹45,000; ₹930 up to ₹60,000; ₹1,025 up to ₹75,000; ₹1,250 above that, per half-year), spread evenly across months. If you work elsewhere in Tamil Nadu, your local body's amount may differ. The constitutional cap on professional tax is ₹2,500 per year. Schedules change through state notifications — if your payslip shows a different figure, your payslip is right for you. Full sources and method: our methodology page.
